DETAILED INFORMATION

The hull was sand blasted in 2002 and epoxy and two pack International Paint coating applied. Photographs of the bare hull showed very few pits. She was last slipped in 2003.

Sails comprise white Dracon main, jip (1999), storm jip and water sail and are in reasonable condition (sail area 132m2). The barge sails very well, being light on the helm (tiller:rudder ratio = 1:1). The horse is situated in the stern cockpit behind the engine box.

The 80hp 4 cylinder 1972 BMC Commodore engine starts first time and its cover (teak faced ply with solid teak top) provides a table/navigation surface. It is keel cooled (closed system - pipes along hull). The propeller is three blade bronze. The brass instrument panel was fitted in 2006 and comprises log, oil pressure etc. The exhaust was partially replaced in 2008. A new steel fuel tank has been fitted in the stern with twin filter system. Throttle controls are beneath the tiller. Sestrel Moore magnetic compass configured for barge.

The decks are laid with 50mm thick and wide teak planking, caulked with Sikaflex 290DC. The cabin roof is comfortable sitting height with steel handrails. Two teak hatches on the foredeck access the cabin and sail locker. A Dutch manual anchor winch (with cover) is situated at the bow and handles the 85m stud link anchor chain.

The cockpit is 3m long, lined with tongue and groove teak panels above and below the all around seats/lockers with teak tops. There is ample storage, gas locker and two 300l water tanks. There is a frame mounted on the stern for wind generator/solar panel. Teak grating covers the cockpit floor with drains to port and starboard at the bulkhead with the superstructure.

Woodwork refurbishment to Douglas Fir mast (new 1993) and spas (boom disassembled and glued 2002), oak lee boards (new starboard 2002), oak rudder and tiller, gunnels etc comprised stripping old varnish/treatments off to bare wood and treating with many coats of UV resistant Sikkens Cetol Marine Oil Varnish. The leeboards are raised and lowered by two manual winches in the cockpit.

The mast is a traditional counterweight type and can be lowered and raised with ease on the main winch. The mast is stayed by stainless steel forestay and four shrouds (no back stays). The topping lift, main and jip halyards are controlled by the main winch which is easy to use. The rigging is stainless steel in good condition.

The barge is very light inside due to the three roof lights and many bronze surround portholes. Access is from the cockpit through a centre double doorway/companionway, down teak steps into saloon (headroom 1m70cm) with centre double leaf table (teak with tiled top), bench seats either side and solid fuel stove at the bulkhead with kitchen/corridor (headroom 1m60cm). The bench seats can be slept on and have storage below and behind. The Waterford stove has a stainless steel double walled chimney with removable section outside for sailing and provides hot water and heating via its back boiler. The galley is to starboard (headroom 1m63cm), comprising four burner gas hob, stainless steel worktop and incorporated sink with mixer tap. Cupboards underneath the sink and below the side deck. The dressing room/corridor (headroom 1m60cm) is to port and has hanging space, cupboards and shelves. The bathroom leads off the corridor (headroom 1m60cm) to starboard (bulkhead with kitchen and cabin) and comprises head, sitz bath with shower over (Gulper Whale 220 pump for wastewater). The cabin is at the bow (full width under the foredeck headroom 1m). There is a double mattress to starboard with small shelf at the bow end and bookshelf above plus another bench/bunk to port with large bookshelves above. The large sail locker with shelves can also be accessed from the cabin. There is ample storage throughout the interior.

The cabin and bathroom were completely refurbished in 2004 - the old interior stripped out to bare metal (hull, sides and ceiling) wire brushed and greased, then new interior fitted. Commercially available sheeps wool insulation was fitted behind the panels providing excellent insulation. Throughout the rest of the barge there is glass wool insulation.

The pressurised hot water and CH systems are serviced by two 12v pumps with expansion and header tanks, fuelled by the solid fuel stove all of which were installed in 2004. Pipes and pumps are easily accessible. The 67l calorifier has twin coils (one free for solar water heating if desired) and a 240v 1kw immersion heater. Radiators are situated in the bathroom, corridor and cabin. The calorifier is contained within a small airing cupboard (forward of the stove) with walnut faced doors.

The Victron battery charger looks after the batteries and was installed in 2005 together with a complete rewire (12v and 240v). Lights are 12v and there are ample 240v sockets throughout with the consumer unit in the sail locker. Wires are encased and easily accessible (ie not behind panels).

The Black Sheep is in very good condition for her age. The owners are selling to purchase another yacht.
